Protoplanetary discs. Computer artwork of two protoplanetary discs, also known as proplyds, in the Orion Nebula. Proplyds surround recently-born stars. They are formed of gas and dust. They might evolve and, following a process of accretion, form planetary systems similar to our Solar System. The discs are illuminated by radiation from nearby stars. The Orion Nebula is one of the most active regions of star formation in the Milky Way Galaxy. It is 1500 light years away from Earth in the Orion constellation.
