The masterpieces of the Centennial international exhibition of 1876 .. . les. By looking at the engraving it will be seen that the shape of thisvase is of an admired Greek pattern. Its handles, twisted like those of theUrbino vases, represent serpents, th(;ir heads pressed flat down upon tlie rimin an attitude of watchfulness, and their bodies attached by finials to the vase itself is composed of crystal, enameled with red glass. Aroundthe body extends a broad zone containing scroll-work and figures cut throughthe enamel to the crystal. The engraving here is of the most minute descrip-tion, every leaf and tendril being worked up with infinite pains. In thecentre of the zone is a winged female figure, supported on either hand bylions conventionally treated. Tliere is no ornamentation upon the stem andbase of the vase, but it rests upon a pedestal, with lions heads as handles, andthe shaft engraved with lovely festoons held up by ribbons. The work here isas minute and intricate as that above, though the design is not so elaborate. INDUSTRIAL ART. 83.
