Electrolysis of water. Close-up of the top of a Hoffman Voltameter used to decompose molecules of water. A power supply (not seen) is used to pass an electric current through the water between two electrodes (not seen) at the bottom of the outer tubes. This splits the water into its constituent oxygen and hydrogen which bubble off as gases at the anode (positive electrode) and cathode (negative electrode) respectively. The gases can be collected at the top of the outer tubes.
