Japan: Ashikaga Yoshimasa (20 January 1435 -27 January 1490), 8th shogun of the Ashikaga Shogunate and Tea ceremony patron. Hanging scroll painting by Tosa Mitsunobu (1434-1525), late 15th century. Ashikaga Yoshimasa, born Yoshinari, was the eighth shogun of the Ashikaga shogunate who reigned from 1449 to 1473 during the Muromachi period of Japan. Yoshimasa was the son of the sixth shogun Ashikaga Yoshinori, and the younger brother of the seventh shogun Ashikaga Yoshikatsu.
