These trees subsequently developed a fine system of branchesall round and grew splendid trunks. Had they not been cutthey would always have been poor, spindly trees. Severalplanters have strongly urged that such branches must be brittleat the point where they unite with the trunk of the tree. Thisis ceitainly not the case with the trees on the Blankahan Estate,which appear to have greatly benefited by their severe treatmentand have increased their girth considerably. Still, one wouldhesitate to recommend such a system for general applicationwithout taking great precautions. 104 THE RUBBER TREE BOOK WTierever double stems develop in young trees one of thesestems should be removed as early as possible so that one thickstem alone should be developed. Forked trees are very aptto split during gales of wind. WTien a forked tree splits in thisway, as a rule nothing remains to be done but to cut the treeout, whereas in the case of an
