Collection of hominid fossil skulls & femur & tibia fragments found at East Turkana, Kenya, during excavations begun in 1968 under the leadership of Richard Leakey. The skulls are (centre) Homo habilis also known as 1470 after its museum number, (bottom) Australopithecus africanus (1830) and (top) Australopithecus robustus boisei (406), an australopithecine of the robust type. These three hominid species were found among deposits that showed they lived contemporaneously, around million years ago. This evidence showed that human evolution had not always been a single- line phenomenon (one species giving rise to another) as formerly held.
