SMITHES INDEPENDENT COMPANY ilS company was organized at Snow Hill, Worcester County, Md.,October 15, 1862, to serve three years. It was mustered out ofservice June 30, 1865, in accordance with orders from the WarDepartment. This company was recruited, in accordance with authoritygranted Captain G. W. P. Smith, by the Secretary of War, « toraise a company for special duty on the Eastern Shore of Mary-land and Virginia, unless the exigencies of the service should require it to be attachedto some regiment for general service. The company was used to prevent the disloyal element in the section of the coun-try in which it scouted from organizing bands of recruits for the Confederate army ; toprotect the loyal element, resident therein ; to keep a lookout for and capture blockaderunners ; in fact, to perform such duties over a wide section that would otherwise havenecessitated the maintenance of large infantry detachments.
