It would be a matter of surprise to many lum- bermen m Canada to find growing in south western Ontario to-day some of the finest hardwood timber which has ever existed in Can- ada. Of course, such examples of hardwood are extremely rare to- £;PT/f tSS,a fCW Sti" t0 be f°Und and they are of ««^ual interest to all who are engaged in the lumber industry. A par- ticularly interesting example is afforded by the county of Elgin The illustrations accompanying this article show the yard and mill of the Wallacetown Saw-mills, of Wallacetown, Out., owned by Mr ,k ^ldrflve> a well known dealer in all kinds of hardwood lumber. A glance at the illustrations will show conclusively that timber VC " t0 S°me m°St attractive hardwood Wallacetown is one of the oldest trading posts in Ontario It is about five and a half miles from Lake Erie on the old lalbot Road, one of the well known stage roads of the early daVs Hie town of Wallacetown was one of the very first to be settled in the county of Elgin. It was the stopping place for travellers and shippers Jong before there were any railroads in that part of the country, Tyrconnell and Port Talbot being the two lake ports for the district, from which large quantities of grain, square timber, and v H :r'U'v VPCf- P ,S mteresting to know, therefore, that al- , "n''il thls d,st"ct has been settled for so many years it is still pro- ' hardwood timber.
