In thisinstance proper arrangement should furnish all the grateful aids tosuccessful memorizing as the sequence of symptoms, the classificationof remedies and symptoms, their comparison for similarities and dif-ferences, the analysis of symptoms, often the physiological or patho-logical explanation of their existence, and that most important aidto memory—repetition. It would seem as though the course of study generally pursuedwere the true course reversed. Memorizing of characteristics shouldbe a later accomplishment, and a study of the original provings thevery first step for a beginner. There are two evident reasons forthis transposition of horse and cart. First, the characteristics arefascinatingly few compared with the cyclopaedic mass of symptomscontained in the provings.
