A statue of José Julián Martí Pérez, Cuba’s national hero (1853-1895) in Parque Central in the centre of Havana in Cuba. He was a nationalist, poet, philosopher, essayist, journalist, translator, professor, and publisher. José Julián Martí Pérez was born in Havana and is considered a Cuban national hero because of his role in the liberation of his country from Spain. He spent his short life, fighting for Cuban independence against Spanish rule until he was killed by Spanish troops in 1895. He was also an important figure in Latin American literature. The international airport in Havana is also named after him.
