The Wilson Avenue Crib sharing a horizon with the sunrise on a late summer morning. Distance and temperatures combine to procide a mirage effect as the sun breaks above the water and crib is located about two miles east of Montrose Point and Montrose Harbor. The 90-foot diameter crib was completed in The crib has been designated as a standby crib and was scheduled for demolition between 2015-2019. The water cribs in Chicago are structures built to house and protect offshore water intakes used to supply the city with drinking water from Lake Michigan. Water is collected then transported through tunnels located about 200 feet beneath the lake, ranging in diameter from 10 to 20 feet. The tunnels connect the cribs to one of two water purification plants located onshore, where the water is treated before being pumped to all parts of the city and nummerous suburbs.
