Dr. Chapins wife having died, hewas married a second time on Aug. 36,1861, to Fan-ny L. Coit of New London, Conn. In 1865 passed several months in Europe to benefithis health, and in 1883 he again went abroad asmember of a committee sent by the American boardof foreign missions to the Turkish missions, for thepurpose of adjusting certain differences between theArmenian churches and the missionaries of the many years he was one of the corporate mem-bers of the board of missions, and in 1884 was ap-pointed to preach the annual sermon. He has alsobeen a director of the American home missionary so-ciety for several years, ,one of the vice-presidents ofthe American missionary association, president ofthe board of trustees of the State institution for deafmutes, and one of the directors of the Chicago theo-logical seminary. Dr. Chapin served on the boardof examiners at the naval school at Annapolis, Md.,. Waylands Political Economy, recasting aind re-writing part of the original work. This revision hasbeen highly praised by the press, and has been adoptedas a text-book by several colleges and schools. In 1886,feeling the pressure of advancing years, Dr. Chapinresigned his position as president of Beloit college,but continues to take charge of the department ofcivil polity and that of history, which, from the be-ginning, have been part of the presidents Chapin is a man of fine mind, he has done muchtoward making Beloit college what it is, and he ishighly respecte
