Spinal nerve damage. Labelled diagram of the effects of nerve damage along the spinal column. The nerves branching off the spinal cord are numbered according to the vertebral region (shown at left and right): cervical (purple, neck, 1-8), thoracic (orange, upper back, 1-12), lumbar (yellow, lower back, 1-5), and sacral (blue, base of spine, 1-5). The effects of damage to these nerves are listed at left, ranging from paralysis of arms, legs and respiratory muscles, to paralysis of areas of the trunk and torso, and loss of bladder and bowel control. Paralysis of the lower limbs is paraplegia. If the paralysis extends to the arms, it is quadriplegia (or tetraplegia).
