Series of four false-colour 3-D images of the congenitally-defective heart of an infant aged 2 1/2 years, assembled by a computer from conventional magnetic resonance images (MRI). These images are all views from the same direction (looking from the foot towards the head), showing varying amounts of heart tissue removed. The image at top left reveals the extent of the defect - a tiny (hypoplastic) left ventricle, which appears as the linear horizontal feature. In addition, the infant has a common atria; left & right atria are only separated by a thin strand of tissue, causing the abnormal mixing of arterial & venous blood.
