Brain and spine CT scanning. Radiographer using a remote control to select and assess computed tomography (CT) scans of a patient's brain (left) and spine (centre). The radiographer is consulting a book on spinal joints and intervertebral discs. A common disorder affecting the spine is a slipped (herniated) intervertebral disc. CT scanning uses X-rays to obtain 2D and 3D images through body tissues. Unlike ordinary X-ray imaging, CT scanning can be used to image soft tissues such as those in the brain and spine.
