Since the bill form cannotbe seen by the operator during theprocess of its preparation, a windowis provided in the machine case atthe right-hand side below the keys,through which the operator may seethe amount and the classification ofthe last item entered on the amounts are imprinted on thebills in red and are automatically sub-tracted from the bill the last item to be shown on i 9^2 Bills for 13,000,000 Customers 45. A Billing Machine in Use The operator is inserting a bill form in the throat of the machine, where it automaticallymoves up to receive charges for the various services in proper order. When the total keyis punched, that final figure is printed and the completed bill is ejected into a rack locatedbelow the operators left hand. Bills for the Bell Systems thirteen million customers includemore than a hundred million items each month the bill form has been entered, aTotal Bill key is depressed whichautomatically prints the total on thebill and stubs, stores it in an accumu-lating register, clears the crossfooterready for the next bill, and ejects andstacks the bill in a tray below the feed-ing table. The operation of the ma-chines may appear to be complicatedin description, but because of theirautomatic features, they are simple tooperate and produce bills which areneat and accurate and for which thecharges are proved against controltotals before the bills are r
