Fungal hypha, SEM
Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of fungal (possibly Tylospora fibrillosa) hyphae from the Northern Black Forest, Germany. The hook-like structure is a clamp connection formed by growing hyphal cells. The hyphal cells contain two nuclei. The clamp connection ensures that each new cell, or segment of hypha, receives one daughter nucleus from each of the two parent nuclei and not two from the same parent nuclei. This maintains genetic variation. Specimen from the Northern Black Forest, Germany. Magnification: x10,000 when printed at 15cm wide.
