With the dissolution ofthe Constituent Assembly, LaFayette resigned his com-mand of the National Guards,which he avowedly held onlyto preserve order until theConstitution should be estab-lished, and retired to his homein Chavaniac taking with hima sword forged from bolts ofthe Bastile and presented asa token of the esteem of hisGuards.
