Certain inconveniences have been observed, viz. vertigo, headache, nausea—of which all may last several days. Finally, this method has been utilized to relieve pain occurring intabes, sciatica, lumbago (see these Chapters). Sicard advised the useof the epidural method for injection of analgesic drugs. This methodis easier and is not followed by the unpleasant symptoms of the first(see for details page 443). CHAPTER XXIV DISEASES OF THE PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM NEURITIS (INFLAMMATION OF NERVES) Pathology.—An inflammation of a peripheral nerve may be confinedto the connective tissue surrounding the nerve (perineuritis) or lying be-tween the individual bundles of the nerves (interstitial neuritis) or else tothe nerve fiber itself (parenchymatous neuritis). In the majority ofcases these forms are Fig. 119.—Neuritis of Sciatic Nerve. (Original.) Examination shows a tumefaction of the tissue surrounding the of the blood vessels, extravasation of blood and sero-fibrinousexsudation infiltrating the sheath, leucocytes around the vessels arethe first changes. Gradually these alterations extend to the interstitialtissue which proliferates. The exsudation within the sheath producespressure on the nerve-fiber itself. In the latter the myelin becomesbroken up into fine particles. When the disease advances, the axis-cylinder itself takes part in the morbid process. It undergoes degener-ation and in more pronounced cases it atrophies and disappears. Incases of primary parenchymatous neuritis, viz. without the involvement 377 378 NEURITIS
