Uterine cancer. X-ray of a woman's uterus showing an adenocarcinoma (pink), a cancer of the uterine lining (endometrium). This malignant tumour is most common in women between 50-70 years old. It causes vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain and difficulty urinating. It develops slowly and can often be treated by removing the uterus and nearby organs. If the cancer has spread, radiotherapy and chemotherapy may also be used. Taking a synthetic form of the female sex hormone progesterone may also prevent the growth of secondary tumours. Injection of a contrast medium has revealed the patient's reproductive system on this X-ray (hysterosalpingogram).
