Britain's civilian volunteers; . sh nurses are in charge of the wards, some-times working entirely under French doctors andsometimes under British doctors, and in one caseat least both French and English doctors workamicably together with an English stafE underthem. As I write there rises a picture in my mindseye of a wonderful old Castle situated in a woodedpart of Seine Inferieur. The two great castel-lated towers, built in grim grey stone, stand outboldly from the side of a hill, and are joined byan ancient wooden drawbridge, which stretchesacross a wide and very deep moat. From thedrawbridge, up between the two towers, theresprings a flight of circular steps, and on the slop-ing ground at either side there are curious-shapedflower beds, ablaze with geraniums and manygaudy blossoms. The great door was thrown open and we wereushered into a long stone corridor, and eventuallytaken through the wards, filled with French sol-diers. This was not a Military Hospital, but hadbeen equipped and staifed by private endeavour,.
