History of Delta Chapter On June 5, 1854, Delta Chapter was instituted at Jeffer-son College, Canonsburg, Pa., the oldest college in the UnitedStates west of the Allegheny Mountains. The installation wasconducted by Samuel Smith, of Gamma Chapter, acting undera dispensation of the Alpha Chapter. The founders were Polk of Maryland; W. H. Pretlow, of Virginia, and H. , R. S.
