Giant moray eels (Gymnothorax javanicus) can be three metres long and make an impressive sight when they are free-swimming, which is usually at night as they are nocturnal feeders. During the day, the eel is usually encountered peeping out from the shelter of a coral reef crevice, in which the bulk of its lengthy body is safely ensconced. A confident apex predator, it can often be approached for a close-up photograph, as in this instance. However, this should be done with stealth and care so as not to alarm the animal. Imprudent divers who are less than careful can get bitten! Egyptian Red Sea
