In 1886 Mr. Herr built an addition tohis place in the shape ol a thiee-quarter-span house, ITMxJJ feet lor carnationgrowing, and one (jOxJ feet for coleus,which latter he began to grow in quan-tity to supply the trade with rooted cut-tings. All of these houses were heatedwith brick flues and with all the old-timemethods. Notwithstanding, our youngfriend turned out, for that time, someyery fine carUiTtion blooms and coleuscuttings, and jdants that made a tradefor themselves. In the blizzard of 1887, the fines did. albeet m. here. surely being one well worthy of emula-tion. Mr. Herr was born July 19, 1862, inLancaster County. His father, DanielK. Herr, has always been interested inhorticulture, and as a boy Albert wastaught to love plants and to learn theirhabits. The family moved to LancasterCity, Pa., when the young man was four-teen years old. Here he spent some timewith A. D. Rohrer & Bro.; and a fewyears afterwards his father started inthe florist business at his present loca-tion. Albert finished a course in the publicschools of Lancaster City, and, he says,took to the botanical studies like aduck takes to water. During his schoolyears he was taught to be self-reliantand industrious, getting an Insight intothe florist business by spending all hisspare moments with his father.
