Recycling domestic waste. Paper bales formed from domestic and office waste sorted on a conveyor belt. The end point of the conveyor belt is at upper right. Non-paper items are manually removed from the conveyor belt, and the paper left behind is compacted into bales and taken away to be recycled. Items that can be recycled from domestic waste include paper, cardboard, glass, metal, plastic and textiles. The non-recyclable components are incinerated or taken to a landfill site. This is the Syctom materials recovery facility in Nanterre, near Paris, France. Since 2004, it has been operated by Veolia Environmental Services, recycling thousands of tons of waste from around a million people.
