The entrance to the shaft at the Golden Progress Mine , Idaburn, Central Otago. The shaft is some 46 metres deep with a 14 metre poppet head above it. The cage was used to move men, ore and equipment up and down the shaft. No mining took place on Sunday and it was then the shaft was used to bring water up to the surface from the mine below. Flooding was always a problem and danger for mines and miners.
