Third largest town in Orkney, prob. named after, St Margaret Queen of Scotland, or St Margaret, Maid of Norway. In August 1263 huge fleet of King Hakon Hakonsson lay in ‘Ronaldsvoe’ prior to sailing westwards to the Hebrides and the ill-fated Battle of Largs. Sagas mention they witnessed an eclipse of the sun on 5 August 1263.
