The Mississippi and Missouri railwayextends from Davenport, opposite RockIsland (Illinois), on the Mississippi, 54miles to Iowa City, connecting the latterplace with the routes from the AtlanticStates to the West. The Burlington and Missouri railwayis another link between Iowa and thegreat routes of Illinois, and eastward tothe Atlantic. It is in operation, atpresent, 29 miles from Burlington, onthe Mississippi, opposite the westernterminus of railways from Chicago toMount Pleasant; will soon be openedto Ottumwa, on the Des Moines River. From St. Louis, take thesteamer up the Mississippi River, 450miles. Dubuque is upon the banks of theUpper Mississippi, in the midst of avery picturesque country. It is, indeed,if we possibly except Iowa City, themost beautiful town in the State. Itoccupies a broad, elevated terrace,which stretches along the great river formiles. Many fine buildings are to be seenhere. Numerous railways of the westfind their way to this point.
