Gile, assistant superintendent for fiveyears, resigned to become professor of theory and practice in theDartmouth Medical School. Dr. J. F. Edgerly was called to thePennsylvania Hospital for the Insane as one of its Elizabeth Newcomb accepted a call as lecturer of physiologyand director of girls gymnasium at Oberlin College. Dr. Nicholswas granted three months leave of absence in which to visitinstitutions for the poor, the sick and the insane in England STATE INFIRMARY 683 This year the first diplomas were granted from the trainingschool, four nurses receiving diplomas. The mens hospital wasbrought under the charge of the superintendent of nurses and thetraining school work extended this department. Dr. John H. Nichols was appointed to succeed Dr. Gile asassistant superintendent. Dr. Emily Pagelson Howard was ap-pointed assistant physician in charge of the department for theinsane. In 1897 the faithful and efficient administration of Dr. HerbertB. Howard came to an end. He resigned June i to become super-intendent of the Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. John was made acting superintendent for four months, at theend of which time he was made superintendent.
