This Fort Riley Friday we continue our flight around the historic structures on Marshall Army Airfield. Building 743 Runway Road was built in 1941 as the Operations Building for the airfield which included the control tower. The poured concrete, two-story building was constructed with a four-story observation tower on the south end. The fourth floor tower was replaced in 1962 with a pre-fabricated aluminum structure. This Fort Riley Friday we continue our flight around the historic structures on Marshall Army Airfield. Building 743 Runway Road was built in 1941 as the Operations Building for the airfield which included the control tower. Fort Riley received a 2012 Kansas Preservation Alliance Award for Excellence for the renovation and restoration of building 743. Although no longer serving as the control tower, the historic building has remained in continuous use to support the missions conducted on the airfield. Currently the building is one of the facilities being used by Detachment 2 of the 3rd Weather Squadron, a Air Force unit that provides support to Marshall Army Airfield.
