Thomas Y. Boyd was born January 9, 1823, inDamascus township, and received such education asthe public schools of his boyhood afforded, but hebegan work at an early age, and the practical busi-ness experience which he acquired in his varioustransactions was by far the more important part ofhis training. After the fathers death he embarked-in the lumbering- business in a small way, and herafted down the Delaware river from Damascus toPhiladelphia, becoming an expert steersman on thatstream, well known among lumbermen especiallyall along his route. He made rapid progress alongthe road to prosperity, and as his interests widenedhis opportunities increased. In 1867, in partner-ship with Joseph Wood, he purchased the sawmillof Truman G. Tymerson, at what is now known asBoyds Mills, this partnership continuing until death, in 1877, after which Mr. Boyd con-ducted the business alone.
