The rhizome, which is theinnermost portion, should beover one-half inch in diameter,spongy, fleshy, easily cut, anddistinctly pale green internal^. The powder is greenishwhen fresh, but soon changesto a brown color and loses itsvirtues. The taste is at firstsweet, afterward astringent, bitter, repulsive ; and the odor is disagree-able, heavy, persistent. There is in the market pared rhizomes of male fern, having a.
