The North China Sika Deer (Cervus nippon mandarinus) is one of the many subspecies of Sika Deer. Compared to other subspecies, the North China sika deer has larger but less numerous spots that are permanent throughout the year. It is previously found in the province of Hebei, China, but now it is thought to be extinct in the wild. The South China Sika Deer (Cervus nippon kopschi) is one of many subspecies of Sika Deer. It is small (standint 85 cm tall at the shoulder), only a litter larger than the Japanese subspecies. The back is brown with a long dark vertebral strip flanked from indistinct white spots, the belly is snowy white. Once it was found all over Southern China, now it is found in isolated populations in southern Anhui, northeastern Jiangxi, northwestern Zhejiang, and southern Guangxi. The wild population is less than 300 individuals. The Dwarf Musk Deer or Chinese Forest Musk Deer is an artiodactyl native to China and Vietnam. On June 14, 1976 China entered the Dwarf Musk Deer onto its endangered species list. There are several subspecies. The Water Deer (Hydropotes inermis) is superficially more similar to a musk deer than a true deer (Cervidae - order Artiodactyla) but it is classified as a cervid despite having tusks (downward-pointing canine teeth) instead of antlers and other anatomical anomalies. These unique characteristics have caused it to be classified in its own genus (Hydropotes) and its own subfamily (Hydropotinae). Native to China and Korea, there are two subspecies: the Chinese Water Deer (Hydropotes inermis inermis) and the Korean Water Deer (Hydropotes inermis argyropus).
