Ramses the Great, or Ramses II (also spelled Ramesses), was one of Egypt's most powerful rulers c. 1279-1212 He reconquered lands in Palestine and Syria, ended Libyan raids, and set up a row of garrisons along Egypt's western border, signed a peace treaty with the Hittites, improved trade relations with Nubia, and ordered many buildings erected.
