B. Uniacke was Premier. But theprinciple of responsible government does not rest on the per-sonnel of the Executive, but on the responsibility of the Execu-tive. The application of this principle was first made by , when he divided the House to test the strength of aparty formed to defeat the coalition government of which hewas an important member. He applied it again after theelection of 1843, when he was defeated by a majority of one, E. M. Saunders. (Omitted from the Presidents Address.) The President referred to the Centennial Number of theAcadian Recorder, published 16th January, 1913. This issueis quite unique in Canadian journalism, marking as it does thesemi-centennial of the connection of the present proprietor andeditor Mr. C. C. Blackadar with the paper. A most interestingfeature is the reprint of the first number of the paper, as it camefrom the press of Anthony Holland, adjoining the Navy Vic-tualling Office, Water St. The paper has been published eversince without interruption, which in itself furnishes a recordin journalism. Since 1886 the policy of the paper has beenshaped by the Blackadar family, and it is noteworthy that theylived for a long period on the site where the first newspape
