Sailing ketch Lamima off Labuan Bajo, West Flores Island, Indonesia

The Lessor Sunda Island, including East Nusa Tenggara, Komodo and Rinca islands are on the east side of the Wallace Line that marks the boundary between Asia and Australian fauna. The Lintah Strait separates Komodo and Rinca islands and runs between the Flores Sea and the Savu sea. It is a volcanic area that with many small islands and it is much drier than the areas west of the Wallace line. In the Lesser Sunda Islands movement of flora and fauna between islands is limited, leading to the evolution of a high rate of localized species. A number of unique endemic species such as the Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) can be found there. These are the largest lizards in the world, weighing 150 lbs or more, and they are carnivorous, eating live prey (Timor deer) and carrion.
