The rather high variation in embyro densities reflects a clumping tendency within the sponge. Figure 1 shows the monthly occurrence of eggs, embryos, and larvae in the total sponge population and the percentage of specimens with sperm masses. Oocytes were first seen in the March samples during 1971 and 1972. However, in 1973 they were present as early as February 13, and in 1974 they did not appear until April 26.
