Globular cluster NGC 4372. True-colour optical image of the globular star cluster NGC 4372 (lower right) in the constellation Musca. Globular clusters are dense balls of relatively old stars which appear to exist in a halo around our galaxy's nucleus. There are over 200 known in our galaxy, and they have been found in other galaxies as well. This cluster lies around 16,000 light years away. The bright star at upper left is Gamma Muscae. This image was produced by digitally combining photographs taken by the UK Schmidt Telescope in blue and red light.
