The city of Segovia, capital of the province of the same name, lies north-west of Madrid in the shadow of the Sierra de Guadarrama. Its old town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. Begun in 1525, the city's cathedral is widely considered to be Europe's last great Gothic building.
