Once the tallest building in the world at 125 meters St Olav s is still the tallest building in Old Tallinn acting as a beacon to mariners The original steeple attracted lightning and the church burned to the ground and rebuilt with a shorter steeple During the Soviet occupation the KGB used the steeple as a surveillance center Although the church is ostensibly named for Norwegian King Olaf II Haraldsson a bizarre legend has it named after a merchant who fell to the ground while attaching a cross to the steeple
