Slough, Berkshire, UK. 4th September, 2023. It was a very hot day in Slough, Berkshire today. Duckweed is starting to smoother the surface of the Jubilee River Flood Alleviation Scheme in Slough near Windsor. Duckweed can cause problems for wildlife, because it blocks out light to submerged aquatic plants. Surface cover of duckweed can also prevent exchange of gases with the air so that the underlying water can become de-oxygenated and noxious to many aquatic animals.
