The Union army enters Richmond (Virginia), the Confederate capital, in 1865. Union troops had tried to take the city on numerous occasions before, but had failed. Union General Ulysses S. Grant took the city, and the Confederate president Jefferson Davis and his cabinet left to go further south. The book dates to 1876.
