R. H., on the top. In the Burgh Records we find 5thJune, 1730. the said day ther was ane piece of painting sett up in theCourthouse done be Richard Waitt, painter, being the armoriall armesof Greatt Brittain with the touns armoriall bearings of St Geills andthe crosses of St George and St Andrew : for which the Councill orders. o % ELGIN PAST AND PRESENT 15 the thesaurer to pay the said Richard Waitt the sum of fifteen poundsStarling money, dedueeing therfrom the sum of three pounds tenshillings Star, containt in ane former precept drawin be RichardWaitt. The new or Sheriff Court House to the east, but incorporated with theold, is internally all that can be desired, and more elegant than mightbe looked for in a city the size of Elgin. The portrait hanging immedi-ately in front of the Sheriffs seat is that of Mr Patrick Cameron,Sheriff-Substitute for upwards of 34 years (1792-1865), a gentlemanstill held in respectful remembrance. On the site of the County Buildings once stood the Mansion of theAndersons of Linkwood, an old Elgin family—a race of most respectableburghers—lawyers, Sheriff-clerks, Commissary clerks, often Provostsof the burgh—the first of whom was in the employ of the famous SirGeorge Mackenzie, Kings Advocate in the reig
