False-colour arteriogram (angiogram) showing the network of arteries (in pink) supplying the human hand. The capillaries of the nail beds are prominent in this image. Arteriography is the X- ray examination of an artery that has been outlined by prior injection of a radio-opaque contrast medium. The technique is used in the diagnosis of numerous circulatory disorders, notably checking for the location of obstructions, as in the fatty plaques of atherosclerosis. Aneurysms, which are balloon- like swellings of the arterial walls, are also revealed by this technique.
