Whether the fam-ily came originally from Silesia or from Poland, cer-tain it is that his father Niclas, a merchant, emigratedfrom Krakow to Thorn, and married the sister ofLucas Watzelrode, later Prince-Bishop of Ermland. Ofthe four childrenthe oldest andyoungest, Andreasand Nicolaus,adopted the cler-ical career, whilethe older girl be-came a Cisterciannun and Abbess ofCulm, and theyounger whole familybelonged to theThird Order of Nic-olaus was hardlyten years old whenhis father died. Hisuncle, Lucas, how-ever, took chargeof the children andgave the boys a uni-versity Nicolaus Copernicus Nicolaus Nicolai de Thorunia was matriculated inKrakow in 1491, where he studied classics, mathe-matics, drawings, and perspective. Professor Blar,who represented astronomy, belonged to the school ofPtolemy. The bishop, himself a former student ofBologna, sent the boys to Italy. In 1497 Nicolauswas enrolled m the University of Bologna as of Ger-man nationahty and a student in canon law. Healso studied Greek and became a disciple of Novara,then professor of astronomy. To obtain for hisnephews the necessary support, the bishop procuredtheir election as canons by the chapter of Frauenburg(1497-1498). In the spring of 1500 the brothers wentfrom Bologna to Rome for the jubilee.
