Liver cirrhosis. Image 2 of 4. Artwork of stage two, periportal stage, of the Child's classification system of liver cirrhosis. Cirrhosis replaces normal tissue with fibrous tissue, causing the loss of functional liver cells. It may result from alcohol abuse, viral hepatitis infection or nutritional deprivation. Damage at this stage includes destroyed hepatocytes (yellow) and retricted blood flows (lower right) through the hepatic artery (red), which carries arterial blood and the portal vein (blue), which brings venous blood from the intestinal tract. For a sequence of the four stages see images M130/658 - 661.
