“The Enchanted City of Bolnuevo or Gredas de Bolnuevo is made of sandy loams or yellowish sandstones, and to a lesser extend of fine lentil-shaped microconglomerates. The sandtones have carbonated edges of bluish-grey colour and different mollusc macrofauna (Pecten, Flabellipecten, amusium, Dirupa), equinoderms (sea urchins) and crustaceans (Balanus). The Gredas, according to the studies of Francisco Serrano, have contributed abundant microfossils (bentonic and planktonic foraminifera such as Globorotalia margaritae or Globigegerinoides obliquus extremus) which date from the Zanclien sub-period (the lower Pliocene, some 4 million years ago). These rocks, which show different degrees of cohesion, have suffered a differential erosion process in which water and wind have been the essential agents. Wind is responsible for alveolar erosion in “honeycombs” that can be observed in some sandstones strata. All this has given rise to capricious micotic shapes of grate beauty.” Text by the University of Murcia and Cartagena
