Eyelid surgery. Image 1 of 4. Close-up of a woman with ptosis undergoing surgery on the upper eyelid. Here, the surgeon is cutting into the eyelid using a cautery, an instrument that burns through tissue. Ptosis is a drooping eyelid, usually caused by a weakness of the levator muscle or superior tarsal muscle of the upper eyelid. It can also be caused by insufficient nerve function at these muscles. This operation involves tightening the lax muscle that is causing the sagging. For a sequence showing this procedure, see images M570/192 - M570/195.
