He also paid muchattention to breeding stock, andimported the best shorthornand Durham cattle from Eng-land, frequently paying as much as $5,000 for asingle animal, rhe venture proved very profit-able, and the Thorndale stock became noted bothat home and abroad. As a merchant Mr. Thorneacquired a large fortune, and an enviable reputa-tion for his honesty and integrity. The differentkinds of leather are divided into three classes: per-fect sides, slightly damaged sides, and badly dam-aged sides. He required his men, in sorting theseover, to put the slightly and badly damaged sidestogether. So much good material was found in his damaged leather that it became celebrated, andcommanded an unusually high price.
