Alcoholics, especially the stronger ones, are undoubted causesif taken continually and in large quantities, whereas beers or light wineshave no influence. Among other causes, mental and physical exhaustion,chlorosis, anemia, and general debility may be mentioned. Local irritationmight also produce it. Pathology.—The commencing lesion in most cases of acne is thecomedo, which is perhaps due to an atony of the musculi arrectores pilorum,. Any other agent which occludesthe follicular orifice and acts as a foreign substance may also cause an inflam-mation of the surrounding tissue, and papules will be produced; if bacteria,especially the staphylococcus pyogenes aureus, enter in places where there isalready a chemical irritation, pustules will be produced.
